Welcome to Security Scribes! This is a project to collect, curate, share, and preserve stories from the security community – from the earliest moments to today.

This is a project created in 2025 for the benefit of the security community (both current and future), and all articles are freely available without a paywall or restrictions. We want to ensure that everyone has access to the important history of this community.

Team

The Security Scribes project was created by Megan Barker and Adam Caudill, as an effort to share and preserve the incredible and important history of the security community and the industry that it created.

No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.

Dead Poets Society, 1989

We firmly believe that stories matter, both in terms of understanding our past, and influencing the future. For this reason, we are dedicating the time needed to bring these tales to you.

Technology Stack

For those interested, here is an overview of the technologies that power this project.

  • This website is built using Hugo for static content generation, for security, performance, and ease of deployment. The site uses a custom theme, inspired generally by classic newspapers and their mastheads. We are grateful to the Hugo team and contributors for this fantastic framework.
  • The main font that we use on the website is IM Fell French Canon. This font was chosen largely for its remarkable history, being based on a font from the collection of Dr. John Fell, D.D., who bequeathed the collection following his death in 1686. For a project that is focused on the preservation of history, a font with such extensive history seemed only appropriate.
  • For collaborative writing, we use Ellipsus, a new platform that is still in beta. This platform has greatly simplified and improved our workflows for writing and allows us to write more faster. We happily suggest Ellipsus for those that are looking for better collaborative writing tools.
